Mission Statement:

In every English lesson at Wyvern Academy, every student will…

  • Be challenged up to and beyond the limit of their understanding
  • Be motivated to find joy in the written word and read widely
  • Receive help to improve their literacy
  • Be equipped with the resilience to tackle any extended reading or writing task

The English Department at Wyvern Academy are committed to instilling our students with confidence and a love of literacy that will take them successfully onwards into the modern world.

The 2017 cohort will be the first group nationally to sit the new GCSEs on the 1-9 scale. Parents will be able to find further details about how to support your child by following the link below. The new GCSEs in English Language and Literature include an extra expectation that students read widely from a variety of challenging sources. Students will also receive revision materials and regular homework to support their study. Additionally, the new Learning Resource Centre is open before school from 8.00am, every lunchtime and afterschool until 5pm (4pm Friday).

English Language and Literature are both extremely challenging and reputable GCSEs that (alongside Mathematics) can carry double weighting in the new performance measures. High standards of spoken, written and reading literacy are valued by every employer and further education institution.
